Archaic

A photo story about a remote northern territory where archaic traditions are deeply embedded in everyday life. The Russian North is a spiritual and cultural phenomenon, closely tied to land and tradition. Despite harsh conditions, people have learned to survive in the North and continue to preserve their heritage — some consciously, others simply out of habit, because this is how their ancestors lived.

But how long will they be able to sustain this way of life amid unemployment and steadily deteriorating living conditions? If their strength one day runs out, we will lose a living archaic culture — rich in meaning, history, sacred knowledge, and symbols. We will lose a sense of who we are.

Most of the photographs were taken in the village of Kerchomya in the Komi Republic.
